Dev Deepawali — Maharaja Motor Boat
Once a year, on Kartik Purnima, every ghat in Varanasi lights up at once — over a million diyas along the crescent, laser projections on the palace fronts, and fireworks over the river. The water is the only place to watch it properly from, and the administration caps how many boats may run.
This is the most affordable way on board: a numbered seat on our fifty-seater, cruising the full arc of the 84 ghats with the Ganga Aarti viewed from the river, the laser show and the fireworks. Snacks and refreshments come round on board, and life jackets are provided and worn throughout.
Expect three to four hours on the water — the ride continues until the scheduled shows conclude.
How it runs
- 4:00 PM sharp — Report at the designated ghatApproaches close to vehicles well before sunset, so late arrivals cannot be moved to a later boat.
- 4:45 PM — Boarding beginsThe boat then crosses to the far bank, where the whole illuminated riverfront is in front of you.
- 5:00 – 8:30 PM — The show beginsYour boat takes you along all 84 ghats — the Ganga Aarti from the water, the laser light show and the fireworks.

Common questions
Roughly three to four hours. The boat stays out until the scheduled laser and fireworks shows conclude, so the finish time follows the administration’s programme rather than a fixed clock.
Children below 10 travel free, but they must be declared when you book. Passes are issued by headcount and an undeclared child can be refused boarding.
Dev Deepawali is run by the local administration and boarding points, river movement, viewing positions and show timings can change at short notice. We pass on instructions as they are released. If an element is curtailed the ride still goes ahead and the fee is not refundable — the boat and crew are contracted for the night regardless.
